Apollonia was founded around 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth on a prominent hill above the Aous River valley, and grew into one of the most prosperous cities of the ancient Adriatic world — Julius Caesar used it as a military base during the civil war against Pompey, and the future emperor Augustus studied rhetoric there. The city declined after a 1st-century BC earthquake altered the course of the river and silted its harbour, eventually fading from significance by the Byzantine period. Today the well-preserved archaeological park combines a working monastery with temples, a stoa, an odeon, and an extensive on-site museum.
