Destination context
The Albanian Riviera stretches along the Ionian coast from Vlorë to Sarandë, sheltered from the mainland by the rugged Ceraunian Mountains whose highest point, the Llogara Pass, reaches over 1,000 metres. The coastline was part of the ancient Greek and Roman world — Himara and other settlements in the area have roots going back over two millennia — but the region remained relatively isolated for most of the 20th century under communist rule, which inadvertently preserved its beaches and landscapes from mass development. Since the early 2000s the Riviera has emerged as one of the Mediterranean's last stretches of unspoiled coast, drawing visitors to its clear water, pine-forested cliffs, and small villages.
